| A benchmark in environmental sustainable construction Sustainable building is the way to a great future ... Background
Newmarket School is embarking on an exciting and ambitious new project. The school, located in in Newmarket on Gillies Avenue opposite Morrow Street, is building a new environmentally sustainable Arts and Activity Centre to replace its existing school hall. The Ministry of Education deemed the cost of upgrading the existing hall uneconomic.
The Board of Trustees decided to make this building as environmentally sustainable as possible. The facility will provide Newmarket School students and members of the local community with a rich learning resource and a space for the arts and recreation. As a benchmark facility this project will generate a large amount of media, design, and construction interest.
The Board has considered carefully the merits of building a structure which is more environmentally sustainable versus a traditional building. Although the initial costs are higher in the longer term there will be lower operating costs. While the Ministry of Education and Newmarket School are funding part of the facility, further funding needs to be raised through the efforts of Newmarket School's parent and local community.
Having decided to embark on the more expensive option of an environmentally sustainable building the Board is now carrying out fundraising to bridge the gap.
Resource consent for the building has been approved and we are now finalising the plans prior to lodge for building consent.
Proposal for Consideration
Newmarket Primary School is seeking funding for the new Arts and Activity Centre. We are offering naming rights, asking for assistance with fixtures, fittings or building materials, financial contributions or sponsorship of our fundraising events. This will be a new school and community facility located in the heart of Newmarket with a floor area of 600 square metres, and will have the capacity to seat 300 adults. This unique building will be sited on the lower field area of the school adjacent to Gillies Avenue and opposite the Morrow Street intersection and will be very visible to the high volume of traffic which uses both Gillies Avenue and Morrow Street.
Research shows that:
- 55,000 cars stop weekly at the Morrow Street intersection
- 90,000 cars travel both directions on Gillies Avenue weekly
The sponsor's name will be placed on the front entrance of the building and on the rear of the building. It will be seen by traffic going along Gillies Avenue. The sponsor's name will be placed prominently on the Gillies Avenue fence and will be seen by all vehicles and foot traffic.
Even before construction begins, interest in the style of this building has attracted many favourable comments. The uniqueness of this building will ensure favourable publicity at all stages of construction that, after completion, will continue to be seen as a benchmark in environmentally sustainable construction.
Environmental sustainability and safeguarding our future are issues that are increasingly in the public domain. We believe the Arts and Activity Centre presents a unique opportunity for your business to be involved in an innovative and forward thinking project.

Design Features
Include: Large foyer, kitchen facilities, a stage, a mezzanine floor for storage, a lift allowing wheelchair and disability access to the stage. A green facade of Boston Ivy continuing the "green" frontage of trees along the Newmarket Primary/Gillies Avenue boundary. A continual mesh screen will be the support structure for a living wall which will, in time, establish as a planted facade of colour ever changing with the seasons. The "living wall" provides a natural filter to regulate the sun and heat for the building, providing a natural solution for regulating temperature, with shade in the summer and sunlight during the cooler months. It is easily accessible to users. The Centre's construction will allow for parking underneath its structure, an important consideration in Newmarket if it is to be utilised by community groups. It will also allow children to engage in physical activity and games under the building's structure in wet weather and can be a shaded area in summer.
